is one of the most versatile flooring options out there, but how do you know which type of tile is the right choice for your space? We’ll help you figure it out.
Ceramic tile is probably the most prevalent kind of tile, and it comes in two varieties: porcelain and non-porcelain.
Traditional ceramic tile is made from non-porcelain clay and minerals and up to 50% feldspar (a white dust or sand that helps harden and bond the materials together).
The variety of ingredients and kiln-drying processes create a huge variety of colors and textures in the tile, so you’re sure to find an option that suits your needs. On top of that, it’s one of the more budget-friendly tiling options.
Porcelain Ceramic Tile
Porcelain tile is a little more expensive than non-porcelain tile, but it’s also more stain-resistant, more durable and offers better water resistance.
Glazed vs. Non-Glazed
Both porcelain and non-porcelain tile can be glazed or unglazed. Glazed tile comes in matte, semi-gloss and high-gloss finishes. Glazed tiles have better resistance to stains, scratches and water absorption, so it’s what we typically recommend for flooring and bathrooms. Non-glazed tile can work great on non-bathroom walls.
Natural Stone Tile
Natural stone is a compelling option these days, and it can make a really striking addition to your space. Natural stone is just what it sounds like — natural materials that are cut to size.
There are a lot of natural stone tile options, including granite, marble, limestone, travertine and slate. Natural stone is typically finished in one of three options: natural (smoothing and polishing with abrasive pads), honed (polishing without buffing), and polished (the addition of polish to create a reflective surface).
