How to Get Rid of Ants in the Kitchen

If there’s anything less appetizing than seeing a line of ants making away with crumbs as you prepare a meal, we’re not sure what it is.  Luckily, you don’t have to let these uninvited guests take up permanent residence.  Read on for our tips on how to get rid of ants.

Why Ants Invade the Kitchen

First things first, it helps to know why ants are showing up in the first place.  Keepi n mind that ants move inside for the same reasons humans do: they’re looking for food, water or shelter from the elements.  So, when ants show up, it’s probably due to one of the following reasons:
  • ants in the kitchen phoenixFood source: If there are any crumbs on your counters or in your cabinets, ants will find them.  This isn’t even a reflection on the level of housekeeping — even the most
    minuscule crumb can attract ants.
  • Water: If you have standing water anywhere, that can also attract an\
  • Weather: Ants don’t like rain, so you’ll tend to see more of them show up in the spring.  They also tend to move inside to cooler temperatures in the summer.

How to Deter Ants From Coming Into the Kitchen

Seal Your House
If your house has any cracks, holes or failed seals on doors and windows, get them repaired.  If ants can get into your home, you’re one step ahead of the game.
Remove Food Sources
Do your best to keep your counters and cabinets free of food and crumbs.  Pay special attention to the following:
  • Keep dried goods like sugar and flour in sealed containers.
  • Sticky messes are also huge attractants for ants, so watch out for honey, syrup or dried fruit juice.
  • The fruit bowl can also attract ants, so consider keeping fruit in a hanging basket that’s harder to get to or in the refrigerator.  Definitely keep an eye on it to make sure the fruit doesn’t get overripe or begin to rot.
Remove Water Sources
Keep your counters free of open containers of water or juice, and wipe your sink dry when you’re finished using it.  Also examine your pipes on a regular basis to make sure you don’t have any leaks.
How to Get Rid of Ants
Once ants have shown up, you can try a natural remedy, and over-the-counter pesticide, or call in the pros.  Natural methods involve placing a deterrent at the source of their entry, such as cinnamon, coffee grounds, lemon juice or oil, mint, a 50-50 vinegar/water solution, or a salt water solution.
Bait traps and ant sprays may work as a deterrent, but they typically don’t solve the problem long-term.  However, combined with the preventive measures already mentioned, they may do the trick.  However, be aware that you MUST use these remedies as directed, and that they can be a danger toward pets and children.
